. Top Story In a unanimous move town and school officials voted to have Christiane Scrapino fill the vacant set on the regional school committee. Scrapino, who answered a variety of questions before the vote, was sworn in immediately following the vote by school committee members and the members of the Ashburnham and Westminster Boards of Selectmen. "I really wanted to serve the town in a place where I have some experience," Scrapino said. Scrapino is a speech language pathologist. She has also runs her own company and owns two properties in Ashburnham. "I'm a good listener and negotiator," she said in answer to school committee member Keith Glenny's question of her ability to work in a group. Scarpino was appointed to the position vacated by Christopher Gagnon, when he got elected to the Ashburnham Board of Selectmen in April. Gagnon had one year left in his three-year term on the school committee. A special election is only held to replace a selectmen and for all other elected boards a vacancy is filled by a joint appointment by the board and the selectmen. Both Ashburnham and Westminster Boards of Selectmen are part of the appointing process because residents in both towns get to vote for the candidates during an election. Two other candidates submitted their names for consideration Donna Michael withdrew her name before the meeting and Walter Snow Jr. did not attend the meeting so the officials did not consider him. Other News School committee members and school officials honored a number of retiring teachers during the meeting. They honor Meetinghouse and Westminster Elementary School teachers Katherine Progen-LeBlanc, Janet Bedard and Margaret Romano; Overlook Middle School Principal Michael Sunderland and teachers Elizabeth Allen, Gwendolyn Gundlach, Paula Wolanski and Susan Myette as well as Oakmont teachers David Reponen and James Mullin. The committee voted to approve the changes to the John R. Briggs Elementary School and the Westminster Elementary School handbooks. |
