Thomas honored for 20-years of work
Thomas was honored on July 14, for passing her 20-year mark with the United States Postal Service. "It has been a great job," Thomas said. "It's been fun to watch some of my customers kids grow up." Thomas has worked at the Ashburnham post office for 17 years. Before that, she worked in Stow and Pepperell. Thomas was also recognized for having no vehicular accidents in her time as a letter carrier. Ashburnham Postmaster Rich Goguen said she has probably driven more than 200,000 miles during those 20 years. "It is a big deal, especially in this area," Goguen said. "The roads are pretty hazardous in the winter." Goguen said since he has been at the Ashb u r n h a m branch of the U.S. Postal Service, none of his main mail carriers have had a vehicular accident. He accredits it to the fact that they are "just good at what they do." T h o m a s says safety is simply about being aware of what could happen. "I know my streets, my customers ... who has dogs, who has children," Thomas said. Thomas gave the example of being more aware in the summertime of children. She said she knows which customers have little ones that will run to the truck when she pulls up. Thomas says she likes her job, and doesn't plan on leaving. She enjoys being on her own, and the fact that she can set her own work pace for the day. She also likes being outside, and said the day goes by quickly. Thomas was honored with a cake and a gift certificate. Goguen said he tries to do something for everyone who has been with the USPS for more than 20 years. -- Karen Mann is a 2006 graduate of Emerson College, in Boston, where she studied journalism.
