Editorial Battle of the Bands on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the town common. The association is not only supporting local business by giving business owners a forum to work together and talk about their experience. They are reaching out to the younger age set by encouraging local student bands to use their musical talents. In an age that students are loosing out on music education because of the expense of instruments, teachers and an increasing focus on standardize testing, the business association can do no more good than to encourage student's interest in music. It doesn't matter that signing on to your computer can give you access to hundreds and thousands of songs by rock 'n roll, hip-hop, jazz or country artists. One of the best things about music is it can be created by anybody, at any time and expresses any mood. Students should be encouraged to use this creative outlet as often as they can and it is great that a local group of adults is willing to sponsor this type of event. Music helps not only with expression but with math, self-confidence and, even to an extent English, as music is poetry. The other part of the event that is important is the fact that it is sponsored by an organization comprised of local businesses. So, all we can do is encourage students to participate and show off their talent. The battle is open to all North Middlesex Regional High School students and any Townsend students at Nashoba Valley Tech. Music lovers should come out and support their musicians and bring your blankets and lawn chairs and get ready for a lot of music, fun and food. To register your band, contact Maureen Denig at (978) 597-5262 or drop by Travel Now at 222 Main Street, to pick up a registration form. |
