Police urge drivers to use caution Ashburnham School Resource Officer Kevin Ahearn joins AAA Massachusetts in urging motorists to drive extra carefully as children start school on Tuesday, Aug. 29. "Safe driving is a year-round responsibility but it's even more important as the schools open," he said. "Keep alert and always obey the posted speed limit, but especially in the school zones. That will make it easier to come to a quick stop if a child darts into your path." Ashburnham's chief reiterated Ahearn's comments and added additional safety advice for concerned motorists. "Many children in kindergarten and first grade will be coping with traffic on their own for the first time," said Police Chief Loring Barrett. "They may not be aware of pedestrian safety rules." Throughout the town there will be police officers to assist our students as well as citizens in crossing the street, please give them the utmost courtesy and respect as they perform their duties. As a part of its annual "Schools Open" safety campaign, AAA Massachusetts and the Ashburnham Police Department are distributing free "Schools OpenDrive Carefully" bumper stickers. - Submitted to The Journal |
