Women's Club news The first meeting of the 2006-2007 club year of the Townsend Woman's Club will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the West Townsend Reading Room, corner of Canal Street and Dudley Road, West Townsend. The business portion of the meeting will be in charge of Bettye Johnson, director. Included will be the secretary's report by Barbara Thaxter, recording secretary and the treasurer's report by Ginny Welch, treasurer. Thaxter will be presenting her program, "Our Trip to Alaska Where It Never Got Dark All The Time We Were There." She and her husband, Bruce, traveled to Alaska from June 12 to June 30 (18 days) to visit their son, Jim, who lives in North Pole, Alaska (a suburb of Fairbanks). He is a 1st Sergeant with the Ninth Army Band stationed there. During their visit they traveled above the Arctic Circle; took a cruise out to see the Glaciers; and visited Denali National Park and saw Mt. McKinley. They went fishing on the Kenai River where Barbara caught an 18-pound King Salmon - 30 inches long. Visitors to the meeting are always welcome. The Executive Board will be in charge of refreshments. The next round table of the North Central District (11th) of the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Massachusetts will be hosted by the Pepperell Woman's Club at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in the Community Church Vestry, Route 113, Pepperell. The "Our Town" afghans are still available and may only be purchased exclusively from the Townsend Woman's Club. Cost is $45. The afghans measure 50by 65-inches and are made of high quality, very durable 100 percent pre-washed cotton, machine washable and made in the USA by Riddle Mfg., Inc. of Burlington, N.C. The afghans are available in three colors - Cranberry Red, Williamsburg Blue, and Hunter Green. The featured venues include: Townsend Common Bandstand, Hart Free Library, Stone Bridge in West Townsend, Civil War Monument, The Cooperage, Round House, Reed Homestead, Old Meeting House, West Townsend Reading Room, Spaulding Memorial School, and placed in the center of the afghan is Memorial Hall.
