Hey - where's my cheese?
"Who Moved My Cheese?" is a pop culture book that

came out a few years back that examines the process of change and how change (or the lack of change) affects people's lives and their goals.

Each of us has inherent mechanisms that help us cope with change and overcome the fear associated with it. Change often represents moving out of a comfort zone into new territory. Change is good. Change is needed. Change can also be scary.

Marja LePoer had been the librarian at the Ashby Library for 13 years. She was let go recently by the library board of trustees because, they say, the library was a mess, LePoer didn't communicate effectively with them and basically, she didn't do what was asked of her.

Together with her husband, LePoer adamantly denies any wrongdoing. They say there is a broken system in the library that must be fixed and that the trustees were over-stepping their bounds in the management of the job. The trustees say they warned the librarian but she says she wasn't doing anything wrong. Despite that, a change was made. She was fired.

Between he and his father, the Landry's held the position of Ashburnham Town Clerk for 48 years. Recently Wes Landry decided it was time to call it quits. Effective Oct. 1, he's done. His decision to leave is a bitter one, although sudden, he said he's been thinking about it for a few years now.

What broke the camel's back however, was a recent 'misunderstanding' of sorts between himself and the town administration. He said he was given faulty questions for the absentee election ballots, and that - when he sent out the ballots as was required of him - he was blamed for the mistake. He said when the mistake was realized, administration printed new ballots without his knowledge.

You can't tell people to send back their old ballots, so we can send them new ones, he explained. He said they went over his head and did everything secretly without him knowing.

Despite the fact the administration apologized to Landry, he decided it was time for a change. He'll soon be on the golf course working on his game.

Westminster's Forbush Library has seen some change over the last few years and will soon see more. The library trustees are currently looking for volunteers to join a committee to search for yet another director. And while that's going on, the interimdirector has made available for public viewing and input, a copy of the library's long-range plans, for fiscal years 20082012.

Now keep in mind, while change is all around us, the fear of change can cause unforeseen reactions and can bring out the best - or worst - in people.

Change can be scary. But the cheese is still there.
