PEOPLE & EVENTS The Ashburnham Conservation Trust will begin its 200607 season of the ACT 3rd Friday coffeehouse at the Stevens Memorial Library. The evening will begin with an hour of open mike performers starting at 7:30 pm., followed by performer Bernadette. A powerful voice of contemporary life, Bernadette is a seasoned songwriter, dynamic singer, and instrumentalist on the mountain dulcimer and guitar. Throughout the evening there will be a tempting selection of baked goods, coffee, and tea available. This is also an opportunity for you to bring your old and unused cell phones (no cords, boxes, or literature) to be recycled. Admission donation is $5. SATURDAY - SEPTEMBER 16 Ashburnham St. Denis Parish will hold its annual bazaar from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on church grounds, Route 12, Main Street. The festivities will include a variety of attic treasures to be sold (opens at 7a.m.); silent and Chinese auctions; harvest, jewelry and craft; "Joe's" food booth, fried dough, home-baked goods; children's games, music; and raffles. Held rain or shine. Join birding enthusiast Nikki Belmonte on a hike to the summit of Mt. Watatic to view the hawk migration. Along the hike and at the summit, basic identification and information on birds of prey will be shared, as well as an opportunity to view the hawk migration from a spectacular spot! Representatives from the Eastern Massachusetts Hawk Watch will be counting birds that day as well see the experts in action. The hike to the summit will take approximately 45 minutes. Sturdy shoes, binoculars and water recommended. Hikers should meet at the main parking area off of Rt. 119 in Ashburnham at 9 a.m. Rain date is Sept. 17. Westminster The Westminster Historical Society will hold its annual flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the society, 110 Main St., Westminster. Collectibles, household items, books, children's items, plants, furniture and more will be available for purchase. Held rain or shine. St. Edward's Church will hold its Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on church grounds, 10 Church St. The whole family will enjoy great food, attic treasures, games, crafts, and baked goods. MONDAY - SEPTEMBER 18 Ashburnham Council on Aging will host an "Apple Pie Delight" at 12:45 pm. at the Ashburnham COA center, 1 Memorial Drive. Donation is $1. For those who would like, lunch is available beforehand at noon. Lunch will be sliced turkey and cream of broccoli soup for a donation of $2. TUESDAY- SEPTEMBER 19 Ashburnham All seniors are welcome to a Trick Wallet Class at 9:30 a.m. at the Ashburnham COA center, 1 Memorial Drive. Cost is $2 for materials. For more information, call (978) 827-5000. Townsend The Friends of the Townsend Public Library present "Butterfly Gardens" with Dixie Pickard of the Bronze Bell. Join Dixie at 7:30 p.m. to learn about butterflies, their habitats and how to welcome them to your garden. The program will be held in Room 2 of Memorial Hall. Other The Nashua River Watershed Association is sponsoring an educational session for horse owners, horse association members, stable and farm owners, conservation commissions, and anyone who has an interest in horse management from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at Ten Broeck Farm, at 49 Prescott St., Pepperell. Topics will include proper manure management, how to follow best management practices on your land, and pasture management. A Nutrena representative will discuss horse nutrition and water quality needs. A veterinarian will speak on horse behavioral and health issues as well as some of the diseases affecting horses today. Other Effective Ways to Conserve Your Family's Land will be discussed from 7 to 9 p.m. at the NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main St., Groton. People who simply want to protect their family's land - be it a farm, woodland, or estate - are faced with a dizzying range of conservation options. Chris Rodstrom, Conservation Restriction Program Manager and Land Protection Specialist with The Trustees of Reservations based at their Doyle Conservation Center in Leominster, will present case studies of how different families successfully conserved their property.
