Was longtime Ashburnham resident; U.S. veteran

ASHBURNHAM - Charles Newell, 92, formerly of 11 Kelton Road, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, in HealthAlliance Hospital/Leominster.

He was born in Ashburnham on Jan. 13, 1914, the son of the late Charles and Edith (Seward) Newell. He resided in Ashburnham for 88 years and had lived for the past four years at the Hillcrest Nursing Home, Fitchburg.

Mr. Newell was a machinist at Independent Lock Co. in Fitchburg, until his retirement many years ago. He attended the Assembly of God Church in Fitchburg and was a former member of the Ashburnham Grange.

He is survived by two step-children, Leslie Needham of Gardner and Jean Needham of Gardiner, Maine; five step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His wife, Claire J. (Pretat) Newell, died on June 15, 2001. He was also predeceased by a brother, Franklin Newell and a sister, Hazel Wilson.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. The John H. Mack Funeral Home directed arrangements.
