Dec. 2

Spartan fans filled Roberts Stadium in Holyoke on a clear, crisp morning to cheer their team on to the school's first Superbowl victory in 22 years.

"It feels great," Head Coach David LaRoche said. "It is a great sense of accomplishment. "

Oakmont Senior John Griffin brought his high school career to a spectacular end by rushing for two touchdowns and catching a third.

Senior Quarterback Kyle Anderson scored the team's fourth touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

Oakmont Junior Dan Marino's recovery of a fumbled punt in the third quarter was one of many Spartan takeaways that helped preserve the shutout.

Oakmont's defense held Frontiers' recordholding running back Steve Skribiski at bay throughout the contest.

The Spartans went 11-1 on the season, with their only loss coming to Clinton by three points in triple overtime. Frontier finished with an 8-3 record.

"We started out two years ago, and we had a plan," LaRoche said that was well executed. "I just told them they deserve everything that they got. "

The Spartans had the chance to put one more score on the board with about a minute left, but took a knee to run out the clock.

"We didn't want to run it in their face," LaRoche said. "We decided it was good sportsmanship. It was pretty evident that we were the superior team."

"They're terrific," Ashburnham-Westminster Superintendent of Schools Michael Zapantis said of the Spartans after the game. "They have a lot to be proud of. I just want to congratulate Dave LaRoche and every player on the team."

Oakmont dominated on both their offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

The Spartans scored a total of 407 points this season, while giving up a mere 99 points.
