New director at the helm for library
Murtland said she is excited about seeing more patrons checking out the additions to the library, as well as the books and collections. "There's a lot here that we like to share," she said. With a newly renovated library, there is a lot of work to be done: putting books on shelves, buying more volumes, continuing the reading and crafts program for children, expanding on existing collections and starting new ones. But it all sounds like music to Murtland's ears. She has enjoyed the job since she came on board a month ago. The Lancaster resident is serving as a library director for the first time. "I fell in love with this library the first time I saw it. I knew once I saw it this was the place I wanted to be," said Murtland. Murtland has worked at the Bolton and Fitchburg libraries, and has extensive experience in research and education. She replaces Marja LePoer who was terminated by the Library Board of Trustees over the summer. Her vision is to bring the library up to date with technology and have books more available to patrons through inter-library loan. She is already working on joining the Central Massachusetts Region Library System, which will allow patrons to request and renew books from the convenience of their homes. "We have been using the old-fashion library card system, but we're moving into the technology direction," Murtland said. Murtland is also focused on increasing the collections of books, magazines, DVDs and periodicals. While the library has expanded space wise, she foresees working with the Friends of the Library and the community in determining what people would like to see as far as programs, services, books and other publications. Murtland is conducting a survey to find out what patrons want the library to offer. She is also open to answer questions and coordinate the use of the new meeting room, which she said is available to people in the community. People can use the room to hold events, as long as they fill out an application at the library, she noted. - + - Nora Cardec is a correspondent for The Community Journal and can be reached at: ncardec@yahoo.com or (978) 827-3386.
