Col. Chester C. Sargent, 84
Had extensive career in the United States Army

CARMEL, Calif. - Col. Chester C. Sargent, U.S. Army, Ret., 84, died Sunday, Dec 24, 2006, after a brief illness.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1922, in Newton, the son of the late Doug and Gladys (Hannaford) Sargent, and grew up on Army posts spending many of his early years at Fort Sill, OK.

Col. Sgt. was an Armor Officer in the United States Army with 30 years of service in Tank Research and Development. His career spanned from the end of World War II to Vietnam, and he was always most proud of the impact he had during his command of the 1/35 Armor Battalion in Germany from 1966-1967.

After retiring in 1975, he moved with his wife to Carmel Valley where until recently he remained active in the Fort Ord Area Retiree Council and as a watch stander at the Maritime Museum of Monterey. He had many friends in Westminster from his summer vacations and frequent visits to see his parents and grandparents.

Col. Sargent is survived by his son, Douglas Sargent, his daughter-in-law Karen Gawthrop Sargent, and his two grandchildren, Scott and Brian Sargent, all of Westminster; and a cousin, Kaye McGee of London, England. His wife, Shirley, passed on in 1997.

Memorial services were held at the Ord Military Community Chapel. Donations may be sent "In Memory of Col. Chester C.
