George J. Carroll, M.D., 89
Was U.S. veteran; well-respected pathologist

SUFFOLK, Va. - George J. Carroll, M.D., 89, of 219 North Brooke Ave, died Monday Jan. 8, 2007, after an illness.

He was born in Gardner, Mass. on Oct. 14, 1917, the son of the late George J. Carroll, Sr. and Kathryn (O'Hearn) Carroll. Dr. Carroll was a 1935 graduate of Gardner High School. While at Gardner High School he was a member of the boy's swim team that was the 1933 New England Schoolboy Champions. He received his AB from Clark University in 1939, and his MD degree from George Washington School of Medicine in 1944.

Dr. Carroll served as a Pathologist at the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk from 1952 until his retirement in 2003.

During the years, he was a Clinical Professor of Pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University, the Medical College of Virginia, and Eastern Virginia Medical School. He was an instructor at Georgetown Medical School and American University in the early 1950's.

He served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948, being discharged at the rank of Captain.

Dr. Carroll was a well-respected and published pathologist in Virginia. He co-authored a book and wrote several articles on such topics of Sudden Infant Death syndrome, drug addiction among physicians, and changes in medical practices, among other issues. Dr. Carroll served on many medical boards and received numerous accolades and awards for his professional accomplishments.

In his spare time, he enjoyed quail, Canadian geese and duck hunting.

Dr. Carroll leaves his wife of 17 years, Donna W. (Webster) Carroll, whom he married at Sacred Heart Church in Gardner on July 15, 1989; five nieces; a nephew; and many cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Phillip J. Carroll, of Haddonfield, N.J. in 1994 and Richard S. Carroll of Holiday, Fla. in 1993.
