Arthur Hakkarainen, 93
Was U.S. veteran; lifelong resident of Westminster
WESTMINSTER - Arthur "Huck" Hakkarainen, 93, of 218 Ellis Road, and Queen Lake in Phillipston, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, in his home following a brief illness.

Born in Milford, N.H. on Dec. 1, 1913, the son of Toivo V. and Olga Liimatainen Hakkarainen and was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Hakkarainen served in the Merchant Marines and the Coast Guard during World War II where he was a boiler engineer and served in the Middle East War zone.

He was an accomplished welder and mechanic and worked for unions locally and around the state retiring several years ago. He also taught welding for a period of time.

Mr. Hakkarainen traveled extensively across the United States and was well known as an expert sailor at his Queen Lake residence and elsewhere. He was a joy to be with and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Karl and wife Sandy Hakkarainen of Holden; two grandchildren, Michael and Adam Hakkarainen; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael F., Mathew, Joe, Krista, Tess, Cassandra, and Lily Hakkarainen; as well as one nephew and two nieces.

Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. in Smith Funeral Home Inc., 69 Vernon St., Gardner with the Rev. Dr. R. Gary Heikkila officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodside Cemetery.
