Winners of Patriot's Pen contest announced

Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Ladies Auxiliary are pleased to announce the winners of their Patriot's Pen contest for students in grades 6 through 8. Eleven students entered the contest.

Theresa Pallotta of Sterling will receive the $100 first place award; Joseph Tremper of Shirley will receive the $70 second place award; and Michael Maney of Pepperell will receive the $40 third place award.

The local first place winning essay was submitted into the District #15 VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary Patriot's Pen competition where it placed second. As a result, Theresa Pallotta will be awarded $150 in U.S. Savings Bonds for that honor.

The Townsend VFW Post 6538 Ladies Auxiliary will honor the winners in four of its youth contests at an open house and awards ceremony to be held at the Townsend VFW later in the school year.

Winners of Voice of Democracy contest announced

Townsend VFW Post 6538 and Pepperell VFW Post 3291 and their Ladies Auxiliaries are pleased to announce the winners in their Voice of Democracy Contest for students in grades 9 through 12. Thirty-two entries were received in the contest.

The audio cassette tape submitted by Lauren Nelson was judged to be the best local entry and she will receive $300 in U.S. Savings Bonds. Stefanie DiLoreto's cassette tape placed second and she will receive a $200 bond. Lauren and Stefanie both live in Townsend and attend North Middlesex Regional High School. The compact disc submitted by Anastasia Alexander of Clinton placed third locally and she will be awarded a $100 bond for that honor.

Rules of the contest permit the local Posts and Ladies Auxiliaries to submit one entry for each 15 entries or fraction thereof received at the local level into the District competition. As a result, Anastasia will receive an additional $100 savings bond for her Voice of Democracy contest entry being selected as the third place winning entry in the District 15 VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary level of competition.

The local Voice of Democracy Contest winners will receive their awards at an Awards Program to be held at their school at the conclusion of the school year.
