Uminski takes second in state geography bee

Overlook seventh grader Chris Uminski took home second place in the state geography bee for the second year in a row.

The competition was held Friday, March 30, at Clark University.

He received $75 and a National Geographic World Globe. He is the son of David and Carolyn Uminski of Ashburnham.

Uminski won top honors at the Overlook Geography Bee to enter the state competition.

Fourth- through eighth-grade students representing dozens of towns and cities in Massachusetts competed in the state final of the National Geographic Bee. These students had already successfully faced school-level and qualifying competitions.

All received T-shirts and certificates for their efforts at the competition at Clark.

Christopher A. Hart, of Westfield, an eighth-grade student at Westfield South Middle School, became the state champion of the annual National Geographic Bee.

The National Geographic Society developed the National Geography Bee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. To learn more about the bee, visit www.nationalgeographic. com/geographybee.
