Xie draws on talent
By Caitlyn Kelleher JOURNAL REPORTER

Overlook sixth grader Susan Xie will have work displayed as part of the Leominster Art Association's exhibition and will receive free art classes for two weeks this summer.

Xie had her work submitted to the John Delibero Memorial Scholarship by Overlook art teacher Brian Beaudoin, which will allow her to attend Art Camp sponsored by the Fitchburg Art Museum. The art camp is two weeks long and located at Applewild School in Fitchburg.

"She's a good kid. She's so appreciative," said Beaudoin.

The scholarship is worth over $500.

The Leominster Art Association was started in 1965 and this is the third year of the scholarship. The scholarship is open to all middle school students in the area. Xie was nominated not only for her work in the classroom but also for work she did at home and brought into school.

Her grandfather who has visited from China has taught her the art of Chinese fan painting.

She gave one of her fans to Beaudoin as a gift at the end of her class. At Overlook students take art as an enrichment course during one of the marking periods. Beaudoin said he looked to the sixth graders at the school because there are few awards for them.
