"Backyard Habitat" will be the theme for Townsend's Earth Day

Celebrate with the Townsend Recreation Department and the Townsend Recycling Committee Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Townsend Common (rain date is Sunday, April 29, from noon to 4 p.m.) Schedule of events include:

10 a.m. - Opening remarks by M.C. Abigail Clarke, D.J.-Dave Lamoureux, country singers Paul Bergeron and Deborahanne Mayer;

10:15 to 10:45 a.m. - Michelle Cannon speaks on, "Happy Worms, Healthy Lawns" at the water bubbler;

10:30 to 11 a.m. - Acoustic Set, Caroline and Blaise Davies Magic act with Recycle Rover

11 a.m. to noon - Animal Adventures featuring live animals;

Noon - Smokey the Bear, Luth's Karate Demonstration, storytelling by Kim Snow Hawk DeRaps

12:30 to 1 p.m. - United Native American Drum Group

1 to 1:30 p.m. - Michelle Cannon presents an "Organic Lawn Demo" at the water bubbler

1 p.m. - "Sanative" performs

Also, an outdoor and indoor plant swap will be held at 10 a.m. (labeled plants should be dropped off by 9 a.m.); Boy Scout Troop 10 will hold their bottle and can drive; Townsend Methodist

Church will sponsor a bake sale

for the Heifer Project; Girl Scout

Troop 643 will have recycled

calendars; Cub Scout Pack

11 will man the games;

4-H Camp Middlesex will serve food; there will be a

U.S. Army rock climbing

wall-scale (free); Friends

of Willard Brook will

sponsor a pinecone bird

feeder craft or play, "Name

That Bird"; the Townsend Rod

and Gun will offer information

on forest thinning; Spaulding students art work and Squannacook students Backyard Habitats will be on display; 4-H sponsors 'plant a seed in a newspaper flower pot', honey bee display, and animals; Dancing Brook Lodge will sponsor a wolf display, items for sale; and Silver Oak Farm will feature live alpacas.
