26 SATURDAY The Fitchburg Rod and Gun Club will hold a free Kids Derby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Richardson Road, Ashby. There will be stocked trout, raffles, and free food including hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches. For information, call (978) 386-5352. The Annual Westminster Elementary School PTO Bicycle Rodeo will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Westminster Elementary School, 9 Academy Hill Road. Ed Robbins, of the Westminster Police Department, will offer a presentation on road safety and rules with your bike. There will be bike safety inspections, the Westminster Police will check helmets for safe fits and register bicycles, then the children will ride their bikes through an obstacle road course. Stillman's Greenhouses and Farm Stand will host its third annual Garden Roots Weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1415 Lancaster Ave., Lunenburg. The event will feature heritage animals, gardening lectures and demonstrations, chef demonstrations, children's activities, Gardener's Market and food vendors. Free and open to all ages. Meet at Pearl Hill State Park parking lot on New Fitchburg Road, West Townsend. Eino, a Townsend resident, has taught fly fishing on the Squannacook River for more than 15 years. Be treated to an overview of the sport of fly fishing, including the aspects of casting, equipment, the fish's environment, and the practice of good conservation. The Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) is announcing the formation and first meeting of a regional, interstate Stormwater Management Discussion Group from 7 to 9 p.m. at the NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main St., Groton. Accepting donations (except clothes) two days before. Table rentals available for $10. Kid Expo 2007 will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Wachusett Community College, 444 Green St., Gardner. Festivities include demonstrations, activities, performances, give-a-ways, and refreshments. Held in partnership with the Molly Bish Institute for Child Health and Safety. The Christian Performing Arts Center's Youth Theatre Company, in collaboration with the North County Land Trust and the Fitchburg Art Museum, will present the environmental fable "Moonscape to Treescape" at 2 p.m. at the Fitchburg Art Museum, 185 Elm St. This whimsical drama, geared toward children of all ages, promises to enlighten, educate, and entertain. Although the play is presented at no charge, admission to the Fitchburg Art Museum is free to members and all children under 12; $7 for adults; and $5 for students and seniors. Sweeney Post 142 American Legion and the Donald A. Gates Post 5509 V.F.W. invite the citizens of Ashburnham to attend Memorial Day celebrations. The Delegation will meet at the American Legion on Williams Road at 7 a.m. Monday, May 28. They will proceed to the following for services - 7:30 a.m. Sweeney Playground; 7:45 a.m. Fairbanks Cemetery; 8:15 a.m. St. Denis Cemetery; 8:30 a.m. Bresnahan Pool; and 8:45 a.m. all participants will assemble on Meeting House Hill Common and march to Old and New Cemeteries for services. All participates will march to Fairbanks Hall for a final ceremony including prayers for the fallen soldiers, a speech by Joseph VonDeck, and a musical tribute by the Oakmont Band. The Westminster American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars invite the citizens of Westminster to attend the Memorial Day celebrations. Celebrations will begin with cemetery ceremonies at 8 a.m. Monday, May 28. Veterans will gather at VFW Hall on Eaton Street, to start to visit various cemeteries for services and transportation will be furnished. Participants will leave the VFW at 8:30 a.m. and will proceed as follows: 8:45 a.m., Whitmanville Cemetery; 9:05 a.m., Woodside Cemetery; 9:20 a.m. Mt. Pleasant Cemetery; 9:30 a.m. World War I Memorial; 9:40 a.m., Civil War Memorial; 9:45 a.m., Spanish War Memorial; and 9:50 a.m., VFW Monument. All veterans participating or parading are invited to attend breakfast - free of charge - at the VFW from 6:30 to 8 a.m. All veterans are invited and encourage to participate in the cemetery ceremonies and march parade transportation will be provided for those who are unable to march. The Parade assembly will begin at 11 a.m. on Lovell Street. The parade will commence at 11:30 a.m. Veterans organizations as well as town organizations and bands will participate. The parade travels up Main Street to the Academy Hill gazebo where final ceremonies will be held featuring guest speaker Brian Knuuttila and Elaine and Kevin Jones will be honored as the town's the Gold Star parents, and a special recognition will be given to the United States Marine Corps by the postmaster. Following the ceremony a chicken barbecue will be held at the VFW. Tickets are $7 in advance; $8 for same day purchases. |
