12-year-old Westminster All-Stars eliminate Fitchburg
Move on in National Little League Tournament
- Submitted to The Journal

The Westminster Little League All-Stars started off the month of July with a bang, defeating the Fitchburg West All-Star team 11-7 on Sunday, July 1, in Fitchburg and advancing to another round of the National Little League tournament.

The win eliminated Fitchburg West from the tournament.

Sparks flew in the top of the third when Westminster's Glenn Viner blasted a three-run homer to center and Trevor Davis banged a two-run shot over the left center field fence. Davis went 4-4, with two singles and a double in addition to his homer. Davis' performance was courageous after he sustained a tough collision with the Fitchburg catcher while being called out at the plate early in the game.

Westminster's impressive offensive attack included Jason Davis' walk, two singles and a double; Evan Phillips' two singles; Seamus Bell's double, walk, and triple; Max Rameau's single; Derek Wegener's single; and Tommy Loomis' single and triple.

Westminster's pitching also delivered. Bell, the starting pitcher, picked up the win - allowing only two hits, striking out seven, and allowing only two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work. Bell exited the game with Westminster holding on to a narrow 6-5 lead.

Phillips came in and got the job done with a K in the top of the fourth. Davis closed the game with solid defensive support from the Westminster infield. A line drive to shortstop

Jason Davis ended the game.

Trevor Garofano kept the defense in check behind the plate and put in a solid performance, allowing few passed balls. Liam Murphy saw action in right field and made a nice grab; Alex DeMarco started in centerfield.

The weekend started shaky for Westminster when they opened up the tournament on Saturday, June 30, with a loss to Narragansett and some tough Gansett pitching. Offensively, Davis connected for a single; Viner had a single and a double; Wegener hit a single; Bell hit a single; Garofano hit a single; and J. Davis had two singles. Max Rameau was the starting pitcher against Gansett and Bell and Phillips saw pitching action in relief. Michael Cudak saw action at second base. Zach Depres was on the team's injury list for both games.
