Voters turn out

On Tuesday the voters in two towns were asked to weigh in on a very controversial issue of how to fund the remaining part of the school override.

Voters decided by a substantial margin not to support the override, and now both sides will have to live with that result.

Ashburnham's Town Clerk Linda Ramsdell did a great job making voting as convenient as possible opening the polls at 7 a.m.

The problem really is that only about 36 percent of voters turned out to express an opinion. Many were pleased by the high level over turnout - 10 percent more than in June, when the same issue was on the ballot.

Yes, the school committee and the other local elected officials don't have the power to send our country to war. But it is just as important to remember the local issues that appear on the town ballot because these votes could also change the course of lives.

And remember every vote counts in the local elections when there is a smaller voting pool.
