Ashburnham calendar for September

The Ashburnham Council on Aging (COA) provides numerous services for the senior citizens in town, most at little or no cost.

The Ashburnham Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located on 1 Memorial Drive in the same building as, and next to, the Ashburnham Police Department.

Ashburnham Seniors are invited to come to the COA to cool off. An air-conditioned room is available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and later with advanced notice. Door to door transportation is available. Cool drinks and refreshments will be provided. Magazines, board games, cards and books available.

All Ashburnham Senior Citizens are welcome to drop in. They have a lot of information that you might find of interest and you may have a good time just getting together for a cup of coffee and a chat.

The following are some of the services / activities available at the Senior Center: Meals-on-Wheels are available to those unable to get out. MOC Nutrition Lunch Meals are served at noon. You must reserve the day before by calling the meal-site at (978) 827-5735. Cost of meals is a donation of $2.

If you need transportation, call (978) 827-5000. Transportation on the Senior Van costs $0.25 each stop in-town and $0.50 each way to Fitchburg or Gardner.

Additional activities include: lunch, bingo, arts & crafts, Forever Young Club meetings and events, line dancing, speakers, blood pressure clinics, exercise, and the Tax Work Off Program.

Information is available to seniors and their families on a number of topics. Referral to other agencies and services is provided as needed.

The following events are planned for For information, to make reservations, September: A Podiatry Clinic will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept.14, at the center. Dr. Ayleen Gregorian will be guest speaker.

The center will host its monthly holiday party at noon Wednesday, Sept. 19. Roast turkey with gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, winter squash, dinner rolls and fresh fruit will be the order of the day. If you would like to participate in the gift exchange, please bring an inexpensive ($5 or under) present. Reservations requested.

The center's monthly "Pizza and Bingo for a Buck" will be held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 25. One dollar buys your lunch, dessert, and a bingo card. All seniors welcome. or reserve transportation, call (978) 827- 5000.

Trips planned

Join the Forever Young Club for a four day/three night trip to Washington, D.C. Friday, Oct. 5 to Monday, Oct. 8. Departure from Ashburnham is 8 a.m. The trip includes motorcoach transportation, three nights lodging, six meals (three breakfasts and three dinners), two full day guided tours of Washington, D.C., and an evening guided memorial tour. Tours feature the new WW II Memorial, Capitol Hill, Embassy Row, the White House, the Smithsonian, and more. For information and reservations, contact Mary Lajoie at (978) 827-4882.
