Spartan Scuttlebutt There are certain signs that autumn has arrived - the nights get cooler, the leaves begin to turn brilliant colors, the Red Sox slide into the playoffs, and Homecoming comes to Oakmont. Homecoming Week began on Monday with the first day of Spirit Week. On Monday, students wore different colors to show class pride - red for seniors, blue for juniors, purple for sophomores, and yellow for freshmen. Tuesday the theme was plaid and flannel. On Wednesday, students wore their favorite college sports outfits. The big day for Homecoming Week is Thursday when the whole school wears green and white to show Oakmont Pride. The Student Council, fall athletes, the cheerleaders, and the marching band lead the entire student body in a deafening Pep Rally to end the school day. Homecoming Weekend begins Friday evening with the gathering of Homecoming floats at Roy Brothers in South Ashburnham at 5:15 p.m. Float judging, to determine the winner, will take place just before the parade kicks off at 6:15 p.m. The parade will make its way down South Main Street, onto Williams Road, up South Maple Ave. and arrive at Hurd Field in time for the 7 p.m. coin toss. The Spartans football team will then take on Holy Name in the Homecoming game. At half time, Student Council Advisor and emcee Lincoln Stiles, will announce the Homecoming King and Queen, and the much anticipated winner of the float competition. The Oakmont Alumni Association will host a Family Sock Hop right after the Oakmont victory (about 8:30 p.m.) in the old gym. Admission to the football game is free for anyone who purchases a Sock Hop ticket before the game. The Alumni Association hopes that all Oakmont alumni, from the Class of 1961 to the Class of 2007, will stop by the Sock Hop with their families. On Saturday night, Student Council will host one of the highlights of the Oakmont school year, the Homecoming Semi-Formal Dance, from 6 - 10 p.m. in the cafeteria. Students must buy their tickets in advance and semi-formal attire is required for both ladies and gentlemen. Homecoming is a timeless fall tradition in Ashburnham-Westminster. Come join in the fun on Friday night. |
