Oakmont Ice Hockey news The Oakmont/Gansett Spartan Hockey team earned a spot in this year's playoffs by beating Blackstone-Millville Regional High School 3-0 on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Iorio Arena in Ashburnham. In the first period team Captain Ian Cornwall started the scoring with wicked slap shot from the point assisted by Liam Rafferty and Matt Biggs. Late in the first period the hard working line of Stephen Amblo, Eric Woodward and Shawn Tule scored the second goal of the game. Woodward scored with about a minute left in the period assisted by Amblo. In the third period Nick Carter finished off the scoring with a blast from the blue line that found the back of the net. Amblo logged a ton of minutes particularly on penalty kills. He weaved relentlessly through Blackstone-Millville defenders. Zack Belliveau played in net and helped earn the team's second shutout of the season. Belliveau made some huge saves during the course of the game. The team skated to a 9-1 victory over Milford High on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Iorio Arena. The team got off to a slow start and ended the first period tied 1-1. In the second period the team came to life sparked by Mike Girard's hustle and piled shots on net. The team kept a great deal of pressure in the offensive zone. The team scored five goals in the second period getting goals by all forward lines taking control of the game. The Spartans finished off the game in the third period by scoring three more goals. This period was highlighted by Brendan Gallagher scoring his first goal of the season and Jayson Guavin making an end-to-end rush and scoring a goal. Mike Girard, one of the team's captains, finished with five points, including a hat trick, and two assists. His line-mates Biggs and Shane Harrington picked up points as well. Biggs got an assist and Harrington scored a goal and earned two assists. Shawn Tule scored and his line-mates Woodward and Amblo earned an assist each. Gallagher's first goal of the season was assisted by C.J. Shell and Carter. Carter scored a goal assisted by Shell and Rafferty. Gauvin's nifty rush through center ice was assisted by Travis Bliss, who recently came back from an injury. Guavin also picked up an assist on Ben Perrett's goal in the second period. Cornwall picked up an assist. Goaltender Aaron Testa recorded another win. |
