Franklin J. Stout, 90
Was U.S. veteran; former journalist and teacher
ASHBURNHAM - Franklin J. Stout, 90, of Ashburnham, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008.
Mr. Stout was a former editor of the Leominster Enterprise, editorial writer and columnist for the Fitchburg Sentinel, regional editor of the Scranton, Pa. Times, and a wire editor in the Boston Bureau of the Associated Press. He won two prizes awarded by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association for coverage of a mine disaster and a Freedoms Foundation medal for an editorial in the Leominster Enterprise. He was honored by the American Newspaper Guild for community service and was a member of the New England Society of Newspaper Editors.
He was a former vice president of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association and a member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association. He was an avid fly fisherman.
Mr. Stout graduated from Leominster High School, Dean Academy, and Syracuse University. He did graduate study at Boston University and received a master's degree in education from Fitchburg State College.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served on three destroyers - the Hank, Lind and Weeks. He was a life member of the Townsend Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Ashburnham American Legion Post.
Mr. Stout was a member of the Ashburnham Conservation Commission for several years and was a president and treasurer of the Turnpike Rod and Gun Club of Ashburnham.
He was an English teacher at Oakmont Regional High School and also taught at Fitchburg State College and Franklin Pierce College.
Mr. Stout leaves his wife, Constance (Adams) "Halliday" Stout. His first wife, Cherrie M (Jackson) Stout, died in 1990. He is also survived by three children, Michael D. Stout of Allentown, Pa., Sally (Stout) Powell of Albuquerque, N.M., and June (Stout) Baker of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one greatgreat grandchild.
