Red Cross look for donors during March

To the Editor:

Every year since 1943, the President of the United States declares that March is Red Cross Month. But maybe what they've been saying all along is that March is "Hero Month," because that's what the American Red Cross is all about - heroes. This is a time set aside to recognize the heroic efforts of those who volunteer their time in the spirit of "neighbor helping neighbor."

The American Red Cross Blood Services, New England Region, would like to honor volunteer blood donors for their commitment to patients in need throughout Massachusetts. Each day, 2,000 units of blood must be collected just to meet the basic needs of the hospitals in our state. Without blood donors - those "Silent Heroes" who volunteer their time to roll up their sleeves and save lives - this would not be possible.

The significance of volunteer blood donors becomes even more evident as we realize that fewer than 5 percent of those who are eligible to donate blood actually do. This tiny minority of people support the blood needs of the rest of their community. These are people you see every day - people from all walks of life - who are making a conscious choice to make their world a better place.

Whether you are a blood donor, a volunteer, or a sponsor, we salute you. At all times of the year, we thank you for going out of your way to help patients in need.

If you aren't a blood donor, or you haven't given blood in awhile, consider joining your neighbors and friends at a blood drive soon. It's a small way to make a big difference.
