Editorial A group of five residents that have taken on a new role in Westminster should be congratulated for the work that they have began. The Agricultural Commission held their second meeting last week and they will meet again next week. Their meetings are focused and direct even as they do something as relatively broad as setting the group's goals for the next year. Their main priority is going to be to develop a right-to-farm bylaw to propose at a future town meeting. The group's members all agree that this should take up the majority of their time in the next year. But don't worry, that is not going to be the first time this group of people shows their collective face to the town. They hope to be making their first public appearance (for lack of a better term) at the Neighbors Helping Neighbors' annual Town Benefit. Each of the members is involved with the commission because they either own or run a working farm where they make their living, or they are involved in farming as a hobby or as a second means of income. Each of these people got involved when the town approved the formation of the Agricultural Commission at one of the last special town meetings. They should be applauded for their effort just like every other town board and commission member. You may not like their stances. You might not like their personality. You might not like their priorities. But each and every one of them is dedicating endless hours in service to their (and your) town. Many are in multi-hour meetings multiple times a week. As the election season comes upon us, take a moment and thank them for their service and then listen to their recommendations about the future of the town. It is not necessary to agree with them because rarely does everyone see things the same way, even they don't always see things the same way. The conclusions are important when deciding to take a vote, but they are not necessary when you need to take a moment to say thanks for serving. |
