Students reach second in state level history competition

The Oakmont team of Kylie Brough, Joe DiVito, Emily Estelle and Stacey Lavenski finished second at the Massachusetts State History Day Competition on Saturday, April 5.

They were honored for their performance of the "Women's March on Versailles" after competing in the Senior Group Performance category. They will go on to compete in the National Competition in Washing, D.C., in late June.

Two other Oakmont entries in the State Competition were Brian Sumner's historical paper on "The Causes of the Sioux Uprising of 1862" and Karl Wing and Elizabeth Brannon's Web site "Space Race: Conflict and Compromise."

These students placed in one of the state's five regional districts, to move on to states.

According to Oakmont Principal David Uminski, these students worked very hard on their projects since last November and were all winners at the Central Massachusetts competition last month.

According to the state's Web state on the competition the Massachusetts History Day- part of National History Day- is a contest designed to encourage students to produce papers, projects, performances, and media presentations based on their own original research. To place well the students were supposed to use original documents and historical records to help them create their projects.
