Nick Carter, a member of the Oakmont Varsity Ice Hockey team, was awarded the 2008 Boston Bruins Ice Hockey Sportsmanship Award.
"Nick is a first line center on the Oakmont hockey team and logs literally a ton of ice time, yet spent very little time in the penalty box," according to his coach Tony Gleason. "Even when on ice officials perform poorly and make bad calls, you will not see or hear Nick arguing with referees or hollering at them from the bench. Nick's attitude is to play through poor officiating, and because of that attitude Nick had an outstanding year."
For six years, the MIAA and Boston Bruins have partnered to honor one worthy student-athlete from every boys' and girls' ice hockey league in the state, according to the MIAA announcement.
Carter, a sophomore, was also recognized by the coaches in Central Massachusetts as a Russell Conference All Star.
Gleason says Carter shows up for every practice and works hard from start to finish. "Nick's record of conduct both on and off the ice is impeccable," Gleason wrote in his nomination letter. "There isn't coach in Central Massachusetts that would not love to have Nick on his team; and not just because he's a great player. Nick's penalty free play along with his excellence as a hockey player is the reason why coaches would want him on their teams. He is admired by all opponents."
