Bernard M. Buckley, 61
Was football coach for area schools
FITCHBURG - Bernard M. "Bernie" Buckley, 61, of Harugari Street, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 12, 2008, in his home.

He was born in Fitchburg, the son of the late James J. Jr. and Katherine M. "Kay" (Ryan) Buckley, and had lived here all of his life. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1965 and received his bachelor's degree in education from Fitchburg State College in 1974.

Bernie had recently retired from the Shirley Department of Corrections where he had worked in administration. Prior to that he had worked in administration at the Worcester County House of Corrections. He was also a civilian employee at the former Fort Devens before its closing and several years ago he had worked at the former Prime Value. He also taught school in the Fitchburg school system.

His true love was coaching football and he had assisted with the Fitchburg High School, Fitchburg State College, and Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School programs. He was currently serving on the Fitchburg High School Hall of Fame Committee.

Bernie leaves his wife, Donna (Cutler) Harrington Buckley of Fitchburg; two stepsons, J.J. Harrington of Westminster and Justin Harrington of Sterling; a step-daughter, Lisa Harrington of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Katherine Schmitt and Patricia Lundy, both of Fitchburg and Barbara Wisnosky of Minersville, Pa.; four step-grandchildren, Aysha, Sierra, D.J., and Jake; several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers, John Buckley and James Buckley.
