Locals participate in Olympics
On Thursday, May 1, 450 athletes converged on Fitchburg State College's campus to compete in the annual Special Olympics North Central School Day Games.

Among the athletes was Isaias Palermo Jr., of Westminster.

Palermo ran in the assisted 50-meter dash for the visually impaired. The 50- meter run is done along side a rope so the runners can stay on course.

"I'm so excited," he said.

He was accompanied by both of his parents and his paraprofessional.

These athletes, from school districts throughout the area, trained hard over the past few months to prepare for this oneday track and field event.

The student athletes were not only able to participate in their athletic events but the whole spirit of the games.

With the music of a DJ and bands filling the Olympic Village area as well as a Block Party in the Village and dance for the athletes and their peer supporters, coaches and family members.

Organizers said the hard work in the preparation for this event was rewarded by complete joy in accomplishing victory.

"While each athlete felt exhilarated and successful, every coach, parent, and volunteer rejoiced in their happiness," said Sandra Fowke, a senior education major at Fitchburg State College. "It was the type of day that extraordinary memories are made from."
